GAO Calls for Electronic Disposal Policy

The Government Accountability Office released a report Monday outlining potential dangers of improper disposal of computers and other electronics.

The report recommended the White House Council on Environmental Quality, General Services Administration and the Office of Management and Budget draft a policy for electronic waste disposal.

The report said the government disposes of around 10,000 computers per week.

However, federal agencies do not have a uniform definition of what electronic products are.

GAO said the government needs a formal disposal policy to prevent hazardous chemicals from leaking into soil and water.

GSA released a bulletin earlier this month barring agencies from both incinerating and displacing old electronics in landfills.

The report also stressed measures to ban agencies from exporting electronics to countries with lower environmental and health standards.

Earlier this month, GAO released an application to enable Apple product users to search and view government reports, videos and congressional testimony.
