Verizon and partner Cellcrypt are testing a voice encryption service that could be available in the fall to military, intelligence and civilian agencies.
According to GCN’s Henry Kenyon, the service will support smartphones and tablets that run on Android, BlackBerry and Apple’s iOS mobile operating systems.
Danny Johnson, director of marketing at Verizon Wireless, told GCN that agencies are gradually phasing out traditional switched networks and moving towards a bring your own device approach.
The company is also developing a system that would allow users to send text messages to 911 if they are not in a position to make a voice call.
Private vendors and the Federal Communications Commission have been working on that capability
