Oceus Forms Team To Develop Navy 4G Ship Network; Cal Shintani Comments

Oceus Networks has added two companies to its contract team for creating a mobile communications network on Navy ships, Oceus announced Thursday.

Cambrium Networks and Broadband Antenna Tracking Systems will provide wireless point-to-point radios and antenna tracking for the networking project.

Cal Shintani, chief growth officer for Oceus, said the goal of the project deliver a broadband solution so ships can communicate with each other in difficult ocean conditions.

Work will be a part of the Defense Department’s larger effort to deploy its Fourth Generation Long-Term Evolution network based on Oceus 4G LTE solutions, Oceus said.

Cambium’s and BATS’ combined solution will aid in delivering ruggedized wireless network solutions for inter- and intra-ship broadband applications.

The Navy will not have to rely on satellite coverage when it receives the point-to-point radio technology, according to Oceus. 

The Reston, Va.-based firm said it will implement the network nodes aboard ships, tactical warfighter vehicles and aerial platforms when needed.

The Naval Air Systems Command will test the company’s 4G technology aboard three ships later this year.
