Northrop Demos Army Portable Lasers On $661M IDIQ; Gordon Stewart Comments

Northrop Grumman Corp. is developing portable lasers for the Army under a  potential $661 million contract, the company announced Thursday.

The Falls Church, Va.-based security and technology firm recently demonstrated a target location module at the New Mexico-based White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

According to the company, the portable Lightweight Laser Designator Rangefinder the locations of two separate tank-size targets from the observation post at extended distances.

Two Army missiles, which contain GPS guided munitions, hit both targets, the company said.

The lasers contain a hybrid sensor, which fuses data from a digital magnetic compass and celestial navigation sensors, said Gordon Stewart, vice president and general manager of the laser systems business unit.

Delivery will start in August and continue into June 2013, the company said.
