HP Designing Off-Power Grid Data Center Architecture

Hewlett-Packard researchers have developed a data center design that would not use traditional power grid energy resources, the company announced Wednesday.

HP Labs, the company’s research arm, said it cut total power usage by 30 percent by employing a specific architecture in combination with energy management techniques.

Data center dependence on grid power and costs went down by more than 80 percent, according to the company.

Net-Zero Energy Data Center architecture uses energy and cooling supply from local renewable sources and matches energy supply with demand required by the information technology workload, the company said.

The company plans to continue developing the technology with other HP divisions and plans to showcase the current design at the HP Discover conference in Las Vegas next week.
