Boeing Basing Wedgetail Plane Off 737; Chris Deeble Comments
Boeing delivered a high-altitude aircraft based on the company’s 737 commercial jet to Australia’s air force in May, the company announced Monday.
Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control planes have an electronically-scanned radar and 10 mission crew consoles that track air and sea-based targets simultaneously.
Australia will declare initial operating capability for its six-plane Wedgetail fleet later this year, said Air Vice-Marshal Chris Deeble, program manager for Collins and Wedgetail within the country’s Defence Materiel Organization.
The company has also delivered all ground segments to support the fleet, which is based at a base in Newcastle.
Recently, the company completed the test flight of a drone that could fly surveillance and reconnaissance missions for up to four days.
