Harris Completes NOAA Satellite System Review

Harris Corp. announced Wednesday it has completed the critical design review of a new weather satellite system.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series Ground Segment helps track and provide weather forecasts and patterns used by more than 10,000 entities including the National Weather Service.

The Melbourne, Fla.-based firm said the upgraded system will process around 60 times more data than the current model.

In addition, the upgrade will also increase the rate of the earth’s imagery coverage from every 30 minutes to every five during normal conditions and every 30 seconds during severe weather events.
