ARINC Develops iPad Navigation Chart App For Military; Rob Simm Comments

ARINC has developed iPad application that will provide military pilots with electronic versions of navigation charts and other printed manuals, the company announced Thursday.

AEROMilBag took two years to develop and the company is preparing the app for operational trials, certification and accreditation.

Deployment could occur by January 2013, according to Rob Simm, a program manager.

Prior to the iPad’s launch in 2010, the company had been seeking the right platform for an electronic flight bag for seven years, he added.

The Air Force issued a request for information in December for electronic flight bags.

All Defense Department aeronautical flight publications and Federal Aviation Administration publications will be available on the app, the company said.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Air Force Air Mobility Command, Air Force Global Strike Command, Air Force Special Operations Command and Defense Intelligence Agency aircrews are currently evaluating the original version release.

Aeronautical software development firm GlobalNavSource helped ARINC develop the app.
