DARPA Seeking Automatic Sewing Machine
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has selected an Atlanta-based technology firm to create a machine that can automatically sew clothing, the agency announced in a Tuesday FedBizOpps post.
Softwear Automation’s goal under the $1,255,258 contract is to develop a machine that requires no direct labor, DARPA said.
The company will create a numerically-controlled sewing machine that tracks fabric movement by observing passing threads.
Under servo control, the machine will move the fabric under the needle stitch-by-stitch.
In 2010, the company received a $98,593.00 research grant through the Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop the machine.
