Northrop, UMD Starting Undergrad Honors Cyber Program
Northrop Grumman and the University of Maryland are launching a new undergraduate program to give students a living-learning environment for cybersecurity education, the company announced Monday.
Starting in fall 2013, the Falls Church, Va.-based defense and technology contractor will provide a $1.1 million grant and support the program for two more years and the university providing a matching contribution.
UMD has close relationships with federal agencies and companies in Washington region that are concerned about cybersecurity, CEO Wes Bush said in the release.
Bush will serve as vice chairman of the program, the company said.
Students enrolled in the Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students program will have the option of interning with the company and preparing for security clearance.
Curriculum will include general cybersecurity offerings, cyber forensics, reverse engineering, secure coding, criminology, law and public policy.
The company will provide guest lecturers, participate in an industry advisory board, give students problem-solving exercise and provide advisers and mentors for capstone projects.
Northrop has supported several initiatives for education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, including the Air Force Association’s CyberPatriot competition.
