Raytheon, Marines Set New Excalibur Launch Distance Record

The Marine Corps recently launched two Raytheon-built artillery projectiles in the Afghanistan theater at a distance of 22.3 miles, the company announced Monday.

According to the company, the launch marked the furthest distance Excalibur has been fired from since the system’s initial fielding in 2007.

Excalibur uses GPS technology to hit targets in an urban environment.

Last year, the Marines fired an average of 32 Excalibur rounds every week.

The company was competing to help the branch fulfill a requirement for small precision-guided weapons, which will be used on an unmanned aerial system.
