ATK Provides Solar Panels For NASA NuStar Satellite

ATK recently helped NASA launch a satellite that will study high energy X-rays in the universe, the company announced Wednesday.

For the NuSTAR satellite, the company provided five solar panels that wrap around and connect to the hexagonal-shaped spacecraft with a yoke panel.

The Pegasus rocket, which carried NuSTAR into orbit, contained ATK-produced payload fairing, interstage, raceways, and filament-wound solid rocket motor cases.

Pegasus carried the NuSTAR satellite into orbit via Orbital Sciences Corp.’s Stargazer aircraft.

ATK’s Goleta, Calif.-based unit made a 33-foot long deployable mast and adjustment system, with the focal plane bench and optical bench coming from the company’s Clearfield, Utah-based unit.

The NuSTAR launch marks the 41st mission carried out by Orbital’s Pegasus rockets, which have deployed nearly 80 satellites into orbit.
