Lockheed Martin is helping the U.S. Navy develop the branch’s second Mobile User Objective System satellite, the company announced Monday.
During a recent space environmental test, a company team exposed MUOS-2 to extreme cold and hot temperatures inside the company’s dual entry large thermal altitude chamber.
According to the company, meeting this milestone clears the satellite for final integrated system test and is another step towards its scheduled 2013 launch.
The first MUOS satellite was launched in February and the company says it is preparing to handover control to the Navy in June.
By 2015, the five-satellite MUOS constellation should achieve full operational capability, according to the company.
