The Department of Veterans Affairs is working to eliminate multi-million dollar contracts for desktop computers as part of its new mobile device strategy, Nextgov reports.
In an interview with reporters Thursday, Chief Information Officer Roger Baker said he believes the department has awarded its last PC contract and the department looking at measures allowing its employees to bring their own computers.
Such a move would be considered a bring your own device plan, where employees bring their own mobile devices to work and connect to agency networks.
Baker outlined security as a major challenge, adding it would need investments in both finances and time to implement the new system.
Individual devices and applications would need to be checked to make sure they are virus free before connecting to the VA’s network, he added.
