NASA Scientist Outlines Agency Open Source Issues

Computer scientists and technicians are claiming NASA does not have a framework for using and developing open source software agency-wide, Fierce Government IT reports.

In an article published at IT Professional, Chris Mattman, a NASA senior computer scientist for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said his team found several issues in open sourcing a NASA project.

Mattman wrote that when trying to open source a lab project, they found issues in choosing licenses, where to distribute codes and how to introduce contributions back into software code .

According to the David Perera’s report for Fierce, code distribution involves choosing between different redistribution models such as Google Code, Sourceforge, Apache, GitHub and Eclipse.
