ATK’s GAU-23 Automatic Cannon Receives Air Force Type Classification; Mike Khan Comments

The  Air Force recently categorized ATK’s modified Mk44 Bushmaster Automatic Cannon – 30mm GAU-23 received type classification, the company announced Monday.

According to ATK, the classification enables GAU-23 integration with AC-130W gunships.

The Arlington, Va.-based firm said the cannon is the standard medium-caliber weapon for ground combat vehicles and naval weapon stations.

ATK Defense President Mike Kahn said “the GAU-23 is uniquely positioned as a proven solution for aircraft to perform armed overwatch missions.”

In conjunction, 30mm PGU-46/B High Explosive Incendiary ammunition was developed for the Air Force Special Operations Command MC-130W Combat Spear aircraft with Dragon Spear configuration to operate with the the system.

The company also developed a roll-on/roll-off pallet and weapon mount for the GAU-23 cannon, allowing fast installation of medium-lift platforms without airframe modification, according to the release.
