AF Seeking ‘Bug’ Sensors for Drones, Satellites

The U.S. Air Force wants to develop new imaging sensors that draw from information in the light field, similar to how spiders and insects process that information.
According to a solicitation notice, the branch wants to integrate the sensors onto drones and satellites for operations in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissances.
Other potential applications include sensors for search-and-rescue missions, the notice says.
Contractors should design the sensors to extract information from the spectral, temporal, polarization and detailed object shape fields from light.
During the program’s first phase, vendors should design a prototype and analyze it for functionality and feasibility.
The second phase is for producing the functional prototype with preliminary contractor testing and that prototype should amenable to further in-depth testing by the sponsor, the Air Force said.
