Coast Guard Receives General Dynamics-Built Search and Rescue System; Bill Weiss Comments

The U.S. Coast Guard has accepted the General Dynamics-built search and rescue system for Sector Buffalo in New York.

Rescue 21 Search and Rescue System allows Coast Guard personnel to respond to distress calls from at least 20 nautical miles from shore.

General Dynamics C4 Systems vice president of Communication Networks, Bill Weiss, said that the interoperable Rescue 21 system is the Department of Homeland Security‘s first nationwide network that is able to “improve maritime situational awareness, communication and collaboration among agencies.”

Sector Buffalo, which responds to about 1,000 search and rescue cases annually, is the 38th sector in the country to receive the Rescue 21 system.

There are currently 247 towers in the Rescue 21 system and it is responsible for monitoring 41,800 miles of US coastline.
