The Air Force will place a Space Fence a radar on an island in the Republic of the Marshall Islands to connect warfighters in the region with the branch’s space surveillance network.
Based on Kwajelein Island, the radar will enter the construction phase by September 2013 and reach initial operations capability by fiscal year 2017, according to the statement from Air Force Space Command.
A Lockheed Martin-led team, along with industry partners General Dynamics and AT&T, recently updated technology on the Space Fence, which operates in the S-band.
Air Force personnel will use the radar to detect, track, and identify space objects in low and medium Earth orbits or from up to 1,200 miles away from Earth.
As an uncued tracking system, Space Fence will also provide users evidence of satellite break-ups, collisions or unexpected maneuvers of satellites.
