NSA’s Accumulo Big Data Platform Testing Commercial Waters
Accumulo, a big data storage software program developed by the National Security Agency, could soon be sold on the commercial market as a company owned by NSA technologists has partnered with Hadoop to take the program to market.
According to InformationWeek, Sqrrl has raised $2 million in venture funding and the NSA submitted Accumulo to the Apache Foundation in 2011 for open source development.
Dave Hurry, head of NSA’s computer science research section, told the website the software brings data sets together and allows users to associate pieces of data with other pieces to find those threats.
J. Nicholas Hoover reports the program is based on Google’s BigTable data model and is a distributed key-value store for structured and unstructured data.
Other U.S. defense and intelligence agencies such as the CIA have started experimenting with Accumulo.
