During phase three of the Mobile User Objective Service/Cryptographic Modernization upgrade program, the company will update software to complete design tasks and prepare for phase four qualification testing in 2013.
Full production of the ARC-231 radios is scheduled for 2015, according to the company.
“Because the equipment upgrades are backward compatible with existing equipment installations, minimal platform changes are required,” said David Patton, ARC-231 senior program manager in Raytheon’s network centric systems business.
Patton also said the radios only require software upgrades to adapt to changing application requirements.
Raytheon says it has sold more than 6,000 of the radios for use on rotary and fixed-wing, manned and unmanned aircraft and for use on special ground mobile and seaborne applications.
They provide both line of sight communications and Demand Assignment Multiple Access Integrated Waveform for SATCOM.
Under a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency program, Raytheon is developing Wi-Fi hotspots for use in the battlefield.
