According to a Department of Defense official, the agency has been using open source software for more than a decade, AOL Government reports.

Dan Risacher, associate director for information enterprise strategy and policy in the DOD Chief Information Officer‘s office, said that the reach and scope of the open source software used in the agency is continuously growing as cloud computing grows.

Speaking at the Red Hat Government Symposium, Risacher also touched on open software’s advantages such as moving away from proprietary applications and single vendor contracts and lower costs and management of software.

Risacher noted that although there are no upfront costs to using open source software, the Pentagon pays for deployment and maintenance.
