BAE Systems has received a £315 million ($565M) contract from the UK’s Defence Ministry for ongoing design work to replace the Royal Navy‘s Vanguard class submarines.
According a Defence Professionals article, the Vanguard class carries the U.K.’s nuclear deterrent and will be replaced from 2028 forward.
John Hudson, managing director for BAE’s systems maritime, submarines, said that the design of a nuclear-powered submarine is one of the most complicated and demanding engineering programs in the maritime industry and that further work emphasizes the ministry’s confidence in BAE’s ability to deliver a design that will meet the country’s needs in nuclear deterrents.
BAE already has over 1,000 employees working on replacing it and most of the work is focused on the development of the new submarine’s design.
