Lockheed Martin has created a laser weapon system with the intent to defend against adversarial close-range rockets and unmanned aerial systems, Defense Update reports.
Tamir Eshel writes the Area Defense Anti-Munitions system has a 3.1-mile tracking range, contains a 10-kilowatt fiber-laser and uses an external radar cue when targeting UAS.
The company tested the system in December 2012 against a target flying on a wire, destroying the rocket within approximately one mile, according to the report.
Lockheed also evaluated the system as it targeted a flying UAS within 0.9 miles and four small-caliber rockets within 1.2 miles, Eshel writes.
The system acquired, tracked and destroyed the targets within three seconds, the report said.
