Google Asking FCC For 2-Year Spectrum Testing Period

Google is leasing spectrum from Clearwire for a planned test of wireless networks that could be used for a new type of radio services, Fierce Wireless reports.

Citing Federal Communications Commission documents, Phil Goldstein writes Google is applying for a license to develop a new “experimental radio service” that will use leased spectrum from Clearwire.

The search engine giant is requesting two-year trial period and will use frequencies between 2524 and 2546 megahertz, as well as bands between 2567 and 2625 megahertz.

Goldstein writes there is speculation that Google will launch some kind of commercial wireless service.

Some floated ideas include a limited wireless network in selected markets to complement a broadband service, according to Goldstein’s story.
