Lockheed Team Develops AF GPS III Software; Keoki Jackson Comments
A Lockheed Martin-led team has developed flight software for a U.S. Air Force GPS satellite program scheduled for launch availability in 2014.
ATK, General Dynamics, Honeywell, Infinity Systems Engineering and ITT Exelis are among Lockheed’s subcontractors for the Global Position System III program, Lockheed said Wednesday.
Lockheed is contracted to build four GPS III satellites and the Air Force plans to purchase up to 32 satellites, the company said.
Keoki Jackson, vice president of Lockheed’s navigation systems mission area, said the company invested in flight equivalent hardware and testbeds to develop the software.
The GPS III team has integrated and tested the software on the program’s satellite prototype and the team will also integrate and test the software on the first GPS III satellite.
Software item qualification testing included 131 individual tests and is needed to both control the spacecraft on orbit and monitor the health and safety of the satellite’s subsystems, the company said.
