Raytheon has won a subcontract from Science Applications International Corp. to supply a sonar system for a prototype undersea drone SAIC is developing for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
The Modular Scalable Sonar System is a medium-frequency hull-mounted system designed to search, detect, localize and track threats autonomously, Raytheon said Tuesday.
SAIC is developing the unmanned vessel prototype for DARPA’s Antisubmarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel program.
“Historically, manned sonars were central to antisubmarine warfare missions,” said Joe Biondi, vice president of advanced technology for Raytheon’s integrated defense systems business.
“By leveraging Raytheon’s heritage in developing undersea sensors, MS3 can be configured to provide the capabilities required for ASW in an autonomous environment,” Biondi added.
Citing U.S. Navy figures, Raytheon says 43 nations operate more than 600 submarines.
