Ball Aerospace Sensor Captures Rocky Mountain Plains; Rob Strain Comments

A sensor built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. that launched in February has taken its first images for a mission to capture photos of coastal regions, polar ice, islands and continental areas.

Ball Aerospace’s Operational Land Imager and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Thermal infrared sensor took photos of the Rocky Mountains and a water reservoir, the company said Thursday.
The photo on the left depicts where the Great Plains meet the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming and Colorado, while the picture on the right shows the Horsetooth Reservoir, a source of drinking water located west of Fort Collins, Colo.
“Release of the first image from LDCM is a great step toward ensuring these improved instruments provide the nation with the most up-to-date understanding of changes taking place across the planet,” said Rob Strain, Ball Aerospace chief operating officer and incoming president.
NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey manage the Landsat mission to collect information on land resources such as food, water and forests.
