National Archives Facilitated Data Breach?

The National Archives and Records Administration may have sent out a disk with confidential information on 70 million veterans, and the incident has been referred to the inspector general for investigation.

A defective hard drive was allegedly sent back to the vendor for repair without being wiped of data.

An IT professional at NARA believes the data breach is indicative of poor security awareness at NARA, according to Wired.com….

Data Breach Potentially Compromises SSNs

According to Computerworld, the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill notified more than 160,000 women Friday their Social Security numbers may have been compromised by a recent breach by hackers.

The system breach was discovered in July, and it appears that some data theft may have occurred as far back as 2007.
